What Types Are Available?

New/Current Style

The new/current style of number plates were first introduced in the UK in 2001 following the prefix style. Two letters at the beginning indicate the area, and two digits at the end indicate the year and date.

Due to a change in regulations, all number plates will be written in black lettering beginning in 2022. There can be no patterns on it, and it must be reflective, to ensure that other motorists can easily see them, they must be clearly displayed.

Prefix Style

The prefix style was first introduced in the UK in 1983 after Suffix style number plates were phased out. Number plates with prefixes indicate the year of the issue by the first letter. 'A' means the vehicle was issued in 1983, and 'B' means a vehicle issued in 1984. These plates were in place until new/current-style plates were introduced in 2001.

Suffix Style

The UK issued suffix style number plates before prefix number plates. It is the letter at the end of this type of plate that indicates the year, not the letter at the beginning. A represents 1963 and Y represents 1982, for example.

Dateless

Dateless number plates are the best option if you want a flexible number plate. Letters and numbers are not used to indicate the age of your car, so it is easy to conceal. It's easier to create a plate that's unique, creative, and personalized when there are fewer restrictions.

Do F1 cars have number plates?

Although Formula One cars do not have standardised number plates, each F1 driver chooses a number that they use throughout their F1 careers. Therefore, only the world champion can use the number 1 for their car number.

Are Formula One cars road legal?

In short, Formula One cars are definitely not road legal. They’re built specifically for the track and for this reason there are aspects of F1 cars which do not make them suitable on a normal road. Furthermore, the nose is too far too low for a normal road legal car, not to mention that they have little protection and no indicators as well.
