What Types Are Available?

New/Current Style

Introduced in 2001, the new/current style of number plates utilise the 2 letters at the beginning to denote the area while the 2 digits at the end denote the year and date.

However, it’s important to remember in 2022 the regulations changed. The new rules mean that all number plates must now be written in black lettering and the background must be reflective and free of any patterns. These new regulations make it easier and clearer for road users.

Prefix Style

Since 1983, the prefix style was introduced. This means the first letter represents the year of issue from the 1st of August. For example, ‘A’ means the vehicle was issued on August 1st, 1983, ‘B’ means August 1st, 1984, and so on alphabetically.

Suffix Style

However, before the prefix number plates in 1983 came the suffix style. While the prefix style of number plates has the letter at the beginning, the suffix style has the letter at the end which indicates the year. For example, ‘Y’ represents 1982 and ‘A’ 1963.

Dateless

Dateless number plates are one of the most flexible options out there. Because letters and numbers don’t indicate your car's age, they make it easy for you to hide it. It’s also great as it allows you to get more creative and really add a personal touch.

Land Rover Number Plates FAQ

How do I change my BMW number plate?

  1. Remove the old plate, lift the screw covers and then remove the screws.
  2. You may be able to lift it easily, but in some cases you may have to use a wallpaper scraper. Be careful not to damage the car in the process.
  3. Next, drill the holes in your new number plate. Top tip: do this from the back, rather than the front.
  4. Once you’ve cleaned the holes of any debris, screw them in place. Ensure it’s firm but not too tight. Otherwise, the plate could crack.
